Tinney Wins Australian International 3 Day Event

Tinney Wins Australian International 3 Day Event

Stuart Tinney has won the Australian International 3-Day Event in a tight finish while the Australian team has emerged victorious against New Zealand in the Trans Tasman competition.

Riding Vettori in today’s CCI**** Olympic standard show jumping event, Tinney from New South Wales narrowly beat Megan Jones who took out second and third positions on Kirby Park Allofasudden and Kirby Park Irish Jester.

Tinney’s win follows a hotly contested competition with less than one time penalty separating the top two riders, Tinney and Jones, at the close of yesterday’s cross country event.

The Australian team, including Olympic gold medallists Wendy Schaeffer and Stuart Tinney and Olympic silver medallists Megan Jones and Sonja Johnson, also beat their Trans Tasman rivals, winning the title back after losing to the Kiwis in 2007 in New Zealand.

In the CCI** competition, Emma Scott from New South Wales took out first place by less than one penalty point on her horse Jenbern Monyana while 17 yr old Andrew Hestletine trumped his much more experienced competitors to win the CIC**.

Olympic champion and Event Director Gillian Rolton says this year’s event – marking 50 years of eventing in South Australia – has been a outstanding success.

“Once again we’ve showcased Adelaide’s capacity for staging world-class events putting on three action-packed days of fiercely contested dressage, cross country and show jumping featuring Olympians and some of the equestrian world’s biggest stars,” she says.

“The weather has been against us but both horses and riders have coped extremely well with the heat and although crowd numbers have been lower than anticipated, we’re thrilled that the grandstand sold out, corporate sales were 30% higher than last year and more than 16,000 people have braved the unseasonable weather to see their heroes in action.”

More than 110 riders entered the Australian International 3 Day Event – the Southern Hemisphere’s most important equestrian event - up from 80 riders who competed last year.

Spectacular show jumping, a challenging cross country course and dressage are features of the Adelaide event, one of only six four-star events in the world.

Nail-Biting Finish to 3 Day Event

Nail-Biting Finish to 3 Day Event

Three action-packed days of competition draw to a spectacular close at the Australian International 3-Day Event tomorrow (Sunday 15 November) with show jumping to decide the overall winner.

Heading into the final day, Olympic gold medalist Stuart Tinney leads the Olympic standard competition just ahead of silver medalist Megan Jones and South Australia’s Luke Jones after today’s challenging Qantas Cross Country event.

Competition begins tomorrow in the Main Arena in Rymill Park at 10am with riders navigating a challenging show jumping course designed to test their skills and experience.

The Show Jumping Day includes the Broome International Airport CCI** competition, Equestrian Australia CCI**** (Olympic standard) event and the Bates Australia CIC**.

Olympic champion and Event Director Gillian Rolton says today’s competition has been of an extremely high standard with less than one time penalty separating the top two riders.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better finish – it really is going to be tight tomorrow and there are a number of riders who could win,” she says.

“It is fabulous to see thousands of people cheering on their heroes and enjoying the shade in leafy Rymill Park and other sections of the Parklands and despite the unseasonable weather, we’ve been pleased with the crowd numbers.

“The big screens under the shade have been popular with spectators while horses and riders have also coped well with the temperatures and were happy with the organisers’ decision earlier this week to shorten the cross country course.

“Not only will spectators have the chance to see world-class riding tomorrow, but they can also enjoy a full program of fun events including the Grape and Gourmet Gallop featuring the best of South Australia’s food and wine and an expanded Trade and Lifestyle Village.”

More than 110 riders have entered the Australian International 3 Day Event, up from 80 riders who competed last year, including Olympic gold medallists Wendy Schaeffer and Stuart Tinney, Olympic silver medallists Shane Rose (who retired at today’s event), Megan Jones and Sonja Johnson.

Spectacular show jumping, a challenging cross country course and dressage are features of the Adelaide event, one of only six four-star events in the world.

Competition kicks off at 10am tomorrow with the CCI** event following the Trot Up and horses being vetted at Victoria Park at 8.30am. The Olympic standard CCI**** event begins approximately at 2pm.

Cross Country Day at 3 Day Event

Cross Country Day at 3 Day Event

The thunder of hooves will be heard throughout the Adelaide Parklands as cross country competition gets underway at the Australian International 3-Day Event tomorrow (Saturday 14 November).

Heading into day two, South Australian Megan Jones leads the Olympic standard competition ahead of Heath Ryan and Sonja Johnson and Shane Rose, both equal third, following today’s exciting test of precision and elegance in the Rymill Park dressage arena.

Competition begins tomorrow from 9am with riders and horses winding their way through a challenging course, including jumps through Rymill Lake, before arriving at the shorter-distance finish line in Victoria Park. The Qantas Cross Country Day includes the Broome International Airport CCI** competition, Equestrian Australia CCI**** (Olympic standard) event and the Bates Australia CIC**. While the Rymill Park area is ticketed, entry along other sections of the course is free.

With a record number of riders competing in this year’s Australian International 3 Day Event, up to 30,000 people are expected to flock to Rymill Park to see some of horse riding’s biggest stars over three days of action-packed competition from 13 to 15 November.

Olympic gold medallists Wendy Schaeffer and Stuart Tinney will battle it out against some of the biggest names in the equestrian world including silver medallists Shane Rose, Megan Jones and Sonja Johnson and defending champion in the Olympic level four star class, Christopher Burton. More than 110 riders have entered the event, up from 80 riders who competed last year.

Olympic champion and Event Director Gillian Rolton said today’s competition had been of an extremely high standard with Jones’ score of 34 a record for this new 4-star Olympic test.

“There is plenty of shade in Rymill Park and under the trees, temperatures are quite comfortable. Spectators numbers today were strong, pre-ticket sales have been our best yet and we’re expecting a lively crowd tomorrow cheering on their heroes,” she said. “Not only will spectators have the chance to see world-class riding tomorrow, but they can also enjoy a full program of fun events including the Grape and Gourmet Gallop featuring the best of South Australia’s food and wine and an expanded Trade and Lifestyle Village.”

With tomorrow’s event coinciding with the staging of the much loved Credit Union Christmas Pageant, organisers have themed the day as a “family day” encouraging families to enjoy the fabulous sights and sounds of the Pageant and then spend the afternoon relaxing in the parklands.

Spectacular showjumping, a challenging cross country course and dressage are features of the Adelaide event, one of only six four-star events in the world. Tomorrow’s competition begins in the Parklands across Wakefield Road opposite Victoria Park Racecourse with the Olympic standard event starting at noon.

Also today, Ms Rolton was awarded Administrator of the Year by Equestrian Australia while Clayton Fredricks was awarded Athlete of the Year and his horse, Benelong Time, Horse of the Year. Jim Dunn also received an award in appreciation of his services to sporting events.

Kiwi Team Arrives in Adelaide

Kiwi Team Arrives in Adelaide

The New Zealand team competing in the hotly contested Adelaide Trans Tasman Challenge – part of the Australian International 3 Day Event – are scheduled to arrive in Adelaide tomorrow (Tuesday 10 November) ahead of competition on Friday.

Won by the Kiwis at the last event held in New Zealand in 2007, the Australians will be out to snatch the Trans Tasman title back in equestrian’s version of the Bledisloe Cup.

The team of six riders, and officials such as vets, coaches and physiotherapists are due to touch down at Adelaide Airport at 10.15 am and will spend the week preparing for the event at the Victoria Park Event stables. Their grooms, horses and grooms will be arriving at the stables 12 noon. “There is an enormous amount of rivalry between the Aussies and our Kiwi counterparts and we don’t want to lose on our own turf,” Event Director and Olympian Gillian Rolton says. “We will have a home ground advantage and hope the people of South Australia will help us to convincingly win the title back.”

New Zealand riders in the Trans Tasman include Heelan Tompkins, Clarke Johnstone, Blair Richardson and Jenna Mahoney.

With a record number of riders competing in this year’s Australian International 3 Day Event, up to 30,000 people are expected to flock to Rymill Park to see some of horse riding’s biggest stars over three days of action-packed competition from 13 to 15 November.

Olympic gold medalists Wendy Schaeffer and Stuart Tinney will battle it out against some of the biggest names in the equestrian world including silver medalists Shane Rose, Megan Jones and Sonja Johnson and defending champion in the Olympic level four star class, Christopher Burton, at the event. Over 110 riders have entered the event, up from 80 riders who competed last year.

“Not only will spectators have the chance to see world-class riding, but they can also enjoy a full program of fun events including a fantastic luncheon, fashion parades, a Masterclass with Olympic Judge Martin Plewa and a flamboyant Dressage to Music display by Spaniard Blas Largo on Northern Hector on dressage day, the Grape and Gourmet Gallop featuring the best of South Australia’s food and wine and an expanded Trade and Lifestyle Village,” Ms Rolton says.

With the Saturday of the event coinciding with the running of the much loved Credit Union Christmas Pageant on 14 November, organisers are theming the day as a “family day” encouraging families to enjoy the fabulous sights and sounds of the Pageant and then spend the afternoon relaxing in the parklands. For the kids, there’ll be plenty to see and do, including pony rides, a dedicated playground area, arts and crafts and children’s entertainment.

Spectacular water jumps, a challenging cross country course and tests of elegance and precision in the dressage arena are features of the Adelaide event, one of only six four-star events in the world.

Won by the Kiwis at the last event held in New Zealand in 2007, the Australians will be out to snatch the title back.

New Zealand riders already lining up to defend their title include Kate Wood on Easy Tiger, Jenna Mahoney on Santos, Anne-Marie Styles on As You Like It, Heelan Tompkins on Sugoi, Donna Smith on Stanage and Clarke Johnstone on Orient Express and Oakley Vision.

“Not only will event goers have the chance to see world-class riding, but they can also enjoy a full program of fun events including a fantastic luncheon, fashion parades, a Masterclass with Olympic Judge Martin Plewa and a flamboyant Dressage to Music display by Spaniard Blas Largo on Northern Hector on dressage day, the Grape and Gourmet Gallop featuring the best of South Australia’s food and wine and an expanded Trade and Lifestyle Village,” Event Director and Olympic champion Gillian Rolton says.

With the Saturday of the event coinciding with the running of the much loved Credit Union Christmas Pageant on November 14, organisers are theming the day as a “family day” encouraging families to enjoy the fabulous sights and sounds of the Pageant and then spend the afternoon relaxing in the parklands.

For the kids, there’ll be plenty to see and do, including pony rides, a dedicated playground area, arts and crafts and children’s entertainment.

“This is the most important event on the Southern Hemisphere’s equestrian calendar combining dressage, cross country and show jumping and we’re expecting a huge turnout of spectators cheering on some of the world’s best riders,” Ms Rolton says.

Spectacular water jumps, a challenging cross country course and tests of elegance and precision in the dressage arena are features of the Adelaide event, one of only six four-star events in the world.
