- Stuart and PANAMERA WIN!
Victoria Park, Adelaide: In front of a sell out crowd Stuart Tinney executed a foot perfect show jump round today to win the Deloitte Australian 3 Day Event HSBC CCI 4*. The victory secured him 15 points on the 2012 HSBC FEI Classics™ leader-board.
The new purpose built arena in front of the Victoria Park Grandstand made for a spectacular setting with thousands taking advantage of the pleasant spring weather to enjoy Australia’s premiere equestrian event.
Placed 4th going into today’s competition, Olympic gold medallist Tinney, placed pressure on the top order when he and Tim Game’s warmblood x thoroughbred mare Panamera (by Staccato) jumped a text book clear round.
“She is a very good jumper and I knew if I rode her well enough then I had a good chance to jump a clear round, but I didn’t expect to win the class,” said Tinney.
Fellow Olympian Sonja Johnson (Albany, Western Australia) and Nikki Brooks’ athletic thoroughbred Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison retained second place with a four fault round.
Johnson, who has only been back riding since mid-September following breaking her pelvis in June this year was thrilled with her result. “A clear round would have won me the class but the big picture is London and considering I have been back in the saddle only eight weeks I am very pleased. Hopefully it has put us right back in the mix for London.”
One rail down for 29-year-old lawyer Emma Mason from New South Wales and F1 Pharinelli was good enough to keep them in their overnight position of third place. F1 Pharinelli was awarded the Peppermint Grove perpetual trophy for the best Australian based horse of 2011 as decided by the national selectors.
“It would have been great to jump clear considering it was that close, it would have been nice to win,” said Mason. “There was a bit of pressure there as Stuart had just jumped the most beautiful clear round of the day. The horse (F1 Pharinelli) really tried and that was the best he could do today.”
Overnight leader Shane Rose had a round he would prefer to forget. Taurus lowered four rails dropping them to 5th place.
Tinney says he is yet to decide on his plans for further participation in the 2012 HSBC series. “I haven’t really thought about that just yet, I didn’t know I was going to win. The main focus is the Olympic Games but I will have to think about that and see what we can do to get some more (HSBC FEI Classics™) points.
“I think it is fantastic that HSBC has come on board with Adelaide, we have some wonderful horses out here and great combinations of horse and rider so to be included in the series is fantastic,” said Tinney.
Technical Delegate Alec Lochore (GBR) commended the event for an impressive venue and high standard of competition. “I think this event is fantastic. What you have here with the stands and the arenas is a world-class facility. The course was a true four-star track, the winners are true four-star riders and horses and would be competitive at any four star competition in North America or Europe. You are absolutely right up there. It is a top class competition and worthy of the status.”
The HSBC FEI ClassicsTM series now moves to Lexington Kentucky in April 2012.

Now part of the international HSBC FEI Classics™, the event is the most prestigious eventing competition in the southern hemisphere with a prize pool of more than $100,000 on offer.
With the who’s who of the Australian eventing circuit taking part, the event also forms an important part of riders’ preparation for the London 2012 Olympics.
Olympic gold medallist Stuart Tinney took out the HSBC CCI 4* class riding Panamera, with Beijing silver medallist Sonja Johnson (Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison) and Emma Mason (F1 Pharinelli) rounding out the minor placings.
Despite a disappointing showjumping round in the CCI 4*, it wasn’t all bad for Shane Rose, the Olympian having a clear round in the Bates Saddles CCI 2* with Virgil to win the class on 50.40 penalty points. Sonja Johnson had to settle for the bridesmaid tag once more, finishing in second place with Belfast Mojito on 55.10 with Annabel Armstrong and Sentry Vision rounding out the minor placings on 59.60.
In the Logan Floats CIC**, Christine Bates left her competitors for dust taking out the top spot with 46.70 on Delago. The next placegetter on 63.20 was Jade Findlay and As Tully, with Cassie Low and Contango Columbus finishing in third place on 64.50.
Held as part of the CCI2* competition, awards were given for the Horseland Young Rider competition which this year was taken out by Makayla Wood and Just Corona on 65.5 penalty points. In second place was Isabel English and Feldale Mouse (67.8) and Joseph Waldon and Spring Vale All Black in third on 71.1.
Craig Barrett (Branxton, NSW) won the Anna Savage Memorial Award for best and fairest rider of 2011.
F1 Pharinelli, ridden by Emma Mason, was awarded the Peppermint Grove Memorial Trophy for best Australian based horse of the year as determined by the national selectors.
Event Director Gill Rolton praised the new venue layout and said having the Deloitte Australian International 3 Day Event featured in the HSBC FEI Classics ™ has taken it to a new dimension.
“Having this event now part of the HSBC FEI Classics ™ gives us great profile in Australia and around the world including being part of FEI TV, who beamed images around the world.“This year’s event is the culmination of many years of hard work to get it to this point – but we only want to grow and build it from here.
“I think it will be fantastic to think the likes of Mary King and William Fox-Pitt those internationally recognised riders who have a big string of horses may come down to Adelaide to get the points for the HSBC FEI Classics ™ – it will really showcase the sport,” she said.Victoria Park, Adelaide: Shane Rose’s masterful cross-country riding has earned him the lead in the second leg of the 2012 HSBC FEI Classics™ series at the Deloitte Australian International 3 Day Event. Rose also leads the Bates CCI 2* class.
Rose has risen from third place to take poll position in the HSBC CCI 4* following a blistering clear round aboard Taurus during today’s cross-country.
“I am on good horses and I rode them well,” said 38-year-old Rose.
“Taurus is a great horse, he’s only a 9-year-old. He could have come here last year but I just thought he wasn’t strong enough so I gave him some time off at the end of the year. Today he was a little wound up as I was on him probably 20 minutes longer than I would have liked as we were held up at the start and then again on course so he was a bit wobbly at times but other than that he was great. Hopefully he recovers well and I jump well tomorrow,” he said
Course Designer Wayne Copping was pleased with today’s results. Of the 31 starters in the HSBC CCI 4* 12 combinations finished without jumping penalties whilst 9 incurred 20 – 40 penalties.
“I think we had a pretty good result. We had 12 clear rounds in the jumping but only 2 within the time and that was what we were trying to achieve, to get people home but have time penalties. It was a big tough track what we set out to do was give them a bit of let up that might bring it back from being a really big course, we gave them a bit of space between fences which gave the horse time to get his mind back in order and allow the rider to relax a bit and concentrate on what they were doing.”
“I think this is Wayne’s best effort,” commented Rose. “It was a really tough track out there but it was beautifully presented. It was tough but fair. I think all the horses that knew what they were doing had a crack at it and did it well. You had to be on your game to get around.”
Rose remains on his dressage score of 45.50 going into tomorrow’s final show jumping phase. Just 4.3 penalties behind Rose is his 2008 Olympic silver teammate Sonja Johnson on Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison, the only other rider to finish within the optimum time.
Johnson’s impressive round elevated her from 11th place. In third place, incurring just 3.2 time faults is Emma Mason on F1 Pharinelli now sitting on 51.2 penalties.
With just one rail in hand, Rose remains philosophical about tomorrow’s all important show jumping. “I think you are always under pressure when you compete, I don’t feel anymore pressure than usual in fact I probably feel less pressure than I have in the past.
“If I ride well he should go well, if not one of the girls will probably beat me,” he said.
Overnight leader Megan Jones and her 2008 Olympic partner Kirby Park Irish Jester incurred a frustrating 20 penalties on course dropping them to 12th place. “He felt amazing, I just over-rode the fence, I came up the hill with too much power and he jumped in too big and ran out of room for the second part,” explained Jones.
“I am mad at myself because he was so great,” she added.
In the Bates CCI 2* Rose and the Vivant gelding Virgil have retained their narrow lead of 0.8 penalties over Queensland’s Kevin McNab on Kelecyn Cognac.
“Virgil is a very good horse and I think has a big future. He’s only a 6-year-old and he’s been very successful so far. He was a bit green out there, over jumping but he did a super job and finished well,” said Rose.
Sonja Johnson has found another talented stock horse in Belfast Mojito (Johnson’s 2008 Olympic horse Ringwould Jaguar was also a stock horse). The pair is currently in third place. Just five penalties separate the top five combinations in this class.
Christine Bates from Wilberforce, NSW has a 15.1 penalty lead in the Logan Floats CIC 2* class on her talented Encosta Delago gelding Delago. A disappointing 20 penalties saw the dressage leader Sophie Adams slip out of contention. Ali Foye improved her position from 12th to 2nd on GP Leica Luvid with the only round within the time place whilst Sam Fasher is sitting in third on Valley.

Tues 15 Nov – Olympic dreams hang in the balance at Deloitte Australian 3-Day Event
The horses and riders are rolling into town for the Southern Hemisphere’s greatest equestrian showdown, the Deloitte Australian International 3-Day Event to be held in Victoria Park Racecourse and the surrounding parklands, 18-20 November 2011.
Adelaide hosts the only 4-star eventing class south of the equator and this year for the first time the event joins the HSCB FEI Classics™, a series which includes the six CCI4-star events held worldwide. The Deloitte Australian 3-Day Event will host the second leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™ 2012 season.
The event, which also runs a two star level competition, will boast a total of 99 horses with 35 in the elite CCI4-star. Seven Australian Olympians, including six medallists (Shane Rose, Megan Jones, Stuart Tinney, Clayton Fredericks, Sonja Johnson and Wendy Schaeffer) will compete across the two classes alongside riders from New Zealand, USA, Australia, United Kingdom and Italy for a total prize pool of more than $100,000.
With London 2012 just around the corner national selectors will be paying close attention this week. This is the only opportunity for riders to put in a 4-star performance on home soil ahead of next year’s Games.
Australia’s Eventing National Performance Director, Prue Barrett, explains the significance of the event in terms of the Olympic Games. “Adelaide a key event in preparation for Australian based riders in their bid to be selected for London. We have more than ten combinations competing at Adelaide that could possibly be chosen on the team so this is a hugely important competition,” she said.
“The Deloitte Australian International 3-Day Event is the country’s premier equestrian competition and one of only six 4-star events held around the world,” explained Event Director and dual Olympic gold medallist Gillian Rolton (AUS).
“For the last 10 years, Adelaide has been the chosen host city of this hallmark equestrian event. We are now extremely proud to take our place in the HSBC FEI Classics™ 2012 season and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors and competitors to an action-packed event in our unique City of Adelaide Parkland setting.”
Riders will be judged by an international Ground Jury, which includes visiting judges Anne-Mette Binder (DEN) and Vanda Robinson (IRE) as well as Australia’s Barry Roycroft. Also travelling from abroad is the Great Britain’s Alec Lochore, who will be the Technical Delegate for the four-star class.
Course Designer Wayne Coping (AUS) will challenge riders with a spectacular course winding through the city parklands. A new water complex in Rymill Lake promises to test combinations and thrill the spectators during Saturday’s cross-country action
