Safety
on Cross Country Day
The Cross Country Day
involves four separate phases of equestrianism, with ‘Phase D',
or the Cross Country obstacles being the most popular and well known.
Riders guide their horses
over the course at speeds up to 570 metres per minute and in many
instances, due to the wooded nature of the parklands and the soft,
leafy ground, it is very difficult to hear or see the horses coming
until they are very close.
Riders rarely have time
to stop their horse and must have a clear run at all times. For
this reason, the Adelaide International Horse Trials has set up
45 staffed and signposted public cross-overs where spectators may
cross the track.
For the safety of horses,
riders and spectators, it is vital that all spectators use the public
cross-overs and do not cross the track anywhere else. Lane tape
(as pictured below) defines the track throughout the parks. Course
Marshals will be positioned around the track to prevent breaches
of the lane taping and signs will be erected at key points to direct
pedestrians to the nearest cross-over point.

To ensure
a safe and enjoyable event for all involved, please follow these
simple rules :
- DO NOT CROSS the lane tape at any time.
- Only cross at the designated pedestrian cross-overs.
- Observe the instructions of cross-over staff and course marshals.
- Keep dogs on a short lead at all times.
- Keep children under constant supervision
Avoid leaning
out over the laning tape.
History
In 2006, the Adelaide
International Horse Trials celebrates 10 years in the Adelaide Parklands.
This international event was born
in the South Australian township of Gawler, 40 kilometres north
of Adelaide in 1954.
Because of its success,
Gawler was chosen as the site of the World Three Day Event Championship
in 1986 which was won by UK rider, Virginia Leng on "Priceless".
The field comprised the best riders in the word including Mark Todd
from New Zealand, and Bruce Davidson from the United States among
others.
The biannual Trans Tasman
Championship which was last held in Adelaide in 2005 was instituted
in 1985 as a lead up event to the World Championship of 1986.
It is shared betweeen Australia and New Zealand, with a young riders
Trans Tasman event held in the between years.
The inaugural "Adelaide"
horse trials was staged at Victoria Park and the East Parklands
in November 1997 at CCI*** level and was upgraded to the highest
level- CCI**** in 1999, making it one of only four such events held
annually in the world and the only such event to be staged in the
Southern Hemisphere.
The event is managed by
Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc and an Equestrian Committee
comprising volunteers and past competitors, many of who have been
involved since the 1986 World Championship.
There are only three other
annual events in the world with the equivalent status, Badminton
and Burghley in the United Kingdom and Lexington in the United States
of America .
The Adelaide International
Horse Trials is unique in being held in the centre of a busy CBD
which brings world class competition right into the heart of the
city.
We invite you to enjoy
our beautiful city parklands, gourmet food and wine, great shopping
and of course, international equestrian competition at the 2006
Adelaide International Horse Trials.
